Why an iitian is no more an iitian!
Exuberating with sheer enthusiasm, with confidence in eyes and sky rocketing ambitions, a student, who had undoubtedly given in 2-3 years of his life preparing for an exam that is supposed to be the toughest entrance exam in the world, was going to his first class at IIT Delhi. For him, it was a divine experience, looking into his future, thinking of how to change the world in his ways. Back at home, his mother was so proud of him, his neighbors coming back every time to congratulate his parents and making them balloon out of pride, making them hope that their son would change their lives and bring them money and respect in the society.
The boy, entering the lecture hall, noticed similar faces like him, eager to take their first step into this long journey of technical education, rich culture and eventually, resulting in bright future. Obviously, all of them were not alike. Some of them did well in the subjects; some did not, although they too were toppers in their schools. And, by the end of the first year, they had well been demarcated by their CGPA’s, the gross scale that evaluates students’ performance. Such was the irony in his fate; he ended up being a 6 pointer.
This is not the story of a single student, but a multitude of them, who strive hard for a place in this competitive world, which butchers you for the slightest of mistakes. A professor, in an interview last year, told the students that what the students in IITD today do is to butcher the system. They have lost the essence of scientific education and the flaws in the system help them continue doing this. He told the students when he was in doing his engineering degree, he used to play football eight hours a day, participate in group discussions, do a lot of recreational stuff and still get very good grades. He said that not following the system is not a crime, as long as you find an alternate way of doing justice to your responsibilities. But, the more you stretch it, the more it reaches the saturation.
A simple and most evident flaw in the system is the students themselves. They have taken the place for granted. A student, as soon as he comes in to this whole new ecosystem, is surrounded by schemers. The schemes they make bring the students into a whirlpool. And these schemers are from all spheres, faculty, seniors, administration etc. They try to fill you with the you-are-good-for-nothing feeling, and the same time, expect a lot in return. Pick up the course plan of any course of IITD and an equivalent course of any other IIT or other institute. You will find the difference in the duration of the semester, which is shorter here and the course syllabus, which is the lengthiest among all. To complete this entire stuff, among the dozen other things around you, which are actually more interesting, like workshops on personality development, singing, dancing competitions, debating, various sports, how do you even imagine to do justice to yourself and your talent and most importantly, to your aptitude?
They say you to keep your mouth shut, to not speak anything about IITD outside. The more mysterious it is, the more popular it is. It is a well believed fact that the day the outer world knows about what goes on in here, no mother will dare send her child to this place, a horrific graveyard of dreams, only to realize that your dreams have been changed by uncountable stimuli by the end of your 4-5 years here. And it is heart-breaking to hear a student from the same department and the same year as yours calling you a loser in public, only you have got a lower CGPA than his. And after what?
IF you ever had the chance to be a student of IITD, you will realize that you were never a student. And the one who taught you were never really teachers. Because they are professors, who think they are smarter than any other person alive and go on strike if paid same as the others. They want more, because they have better schemes. They have schemes to have the students who obey them get better grades, despite their sincerity. Actually, they do not demand sincerity; all they want is a blind following. A professor gives an assignment, asking the students to try it at their best, saying that copying won’t do any good, marks will not be given, where as in his own mind, he knows none of the student has the aptitude to do it and they will eventually copy it from internet. A freaked out student, as others call him, tries to do it on his own, trying hard to do it on his own, thinking that if the teacher thinks he can do it, then he must and must be penalized if he is unable to do it. Honestly, he cannot do it, and thus, not submit it. The department rankers, who are well above 9 in their CGPA, copy it from somewhere, confess it and laugh about it and on the person who, so honestly, refused to cheat, not on the teacher, but on himself. What else must he have done?
Another teacher asks the students who are not able to do any assignment to copy it, but submit it at any cost. It will give them at least 50 % marks. What would you call this? And they expect us to be the best engineers. It is a pity that such a thing had to be said, but if not said now, it will eventually lead to extinction to the species called IITians. And no one will ever have a clue.
